Islam Provokes the Crusades

In the words of an expert warrior, “War is all Hell.” That’s why the notion of a Christian holy war is fraught with contradiction. Christ’s teaching is silent on the virtues of snappy swordplay and yet early Christians were threatened by powerful enemies against whom they occasionally struggled. Were they offending God? By the Eleventh Century the Church fathers had worked out a doctrine which allowed that under certain circumstances God would condone the use of armed struggle and possibly even encourage it.

One fine afternoon in 1095, while touring France, Pope Urban II gave a sermon in Clermont in which he urged Christians to sally eastward and reclaim the Holy Land from the infidels who had captured Jerusalem four centuries earlier. For good measure he threw in some fanciful imagery about Muslims raping Christian women, defiling Christian altars and using Christians for archery practice. He called the infidels “A race absolutely alien to God.” By the end of the sermon the Muslims had been thoroughly “other-ized.” In the ensuing months, at gatherings across Europe, as many as one hundred thousand Christians volunteered to “take the Cross.”

Thus began the first of five crusades over the following two centuries. The up side of this campaign for Pope Urban was a strengthening of the Papacy in Europe and an enhanced European tranquility as feuding nobles turned their attentions eastward, united in a holy purpose. The campaign would also project European influence into the Byzantine Empire, the home ground of the Greek Orthodox Church, which had broken with the Western Church in 1054.

Our understanding of the Crusades has been clouded by three much later social phenomena: the Nineteenth Century fondness for romantic literature, the ideological struggles of the Twentieth Century, and the rise of a post-World War II left-wing academia. To folks in the Nineteenth Century almost all things medieval were heroic, spiritually pure and delightfully exotic. The Crusades, with their pleasant admixture of orientalism, were especially appealing. Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe and The Talisman transported readers to a world of brave knights, elaborate pageantry, intense devotion and romantic love. This literary imagery was colorfully supplemented by an outpouring of romantic oil paintings. Romanticized versions of the Crusades were also popular with the promoters of Nineteenth Century liberation movements who were eager to cast off foreign hegemony. Giuseppi Verdi’s grand opera I, Lombardi appears to be all about brave knights and a heroic struggle against scimitar-wielding infidels but its subtext is all about the Lombards’ struggle against the Austrians, not the Saracens. In both versions, Verdi was rooting for the Lombards.

Over time, the Christian West has come to use the word crusade more broadly to include any great struggle in a worthy cause. Thomas Jefferson had used it to advantage as had the abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. It was in this same sense that British Prime Minister Lloyd George titled his collected speeches of the First World War The Great Crusade and in which Dwight Eisenhower titled his memoirs of the Second World War Crusade in Europe. It was also in this sense that President George W. Bush chose to characterize his struggle against terrorizing freelance Muslim warlords as a crusade. He did this five days after one of these warlords slaughtered thousands of his fellow citizens in the heart of America’s premier city. It was only because Mr. Bush made this allusion well after the ascendancy of the left-wing academics that he was excoriated for using it. How dare he suggest that any Western crusade was ever anything but an ignominious descent into depravity?

The liberals heaped on the abuse. James Reston Jr., a “senior scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars” supplied the Los Angeles Times with the politically-correct template for reinterpreting the Crusades, right down to a witless defense of Islamic jihad. Reston chided the president: “In using the word, Bush scratched a raw sore of Arab resentment and handed Muslim fundamentalists a great gift: They could now use the U.S. president’s own words in casting the struggle as another Western crusade against Arab lands and Islam itself. Bush’s gaffe ensured that the terms of the conflict between the West and the East were defined at the outset: Christianity against Islam, Western materialism against Eastern spiritualism.” Wow. Coming from a guy who bills himself as a “senior scholar” at a “Center for Scholars” this is a remarkably stupid load of crap.

First of all, the gushing slaughterfest of September 11th, 2001 was in its planning stages for years. These Muslim bigots had attempted to topple one of the World Trade Towers against the other with a subterranean bomb blast in 1993 that injured thousands of civilians and murdered six people. All of these jerks had long ago convinced themselves that they were engaged in a holy war against the West, against modernity, against everything that did not comport exactly with their interpretation of the Prophet Muhammad’s Big Memo. Their restricted version of Islam is what “senior scholar” James Reston Junior calls “Eastern spiritualism.”

Let’s be real: from its earliest moments Islam was a political as well as a religious mass movement. What Reston calls “Arab lands” were occupied by Christians and Jews and animists long before Muhammad’s acolytes arrived – weapons at the ready.

In the condescending tone of the all-knowing liberal academic, James Reston Jr. tells us that “In the West, it is hard to grasp why events that happened nearly a millennium ago still dominate Arab perceptions of Europeans – and, by extension, Americans. There were five principal Crusades in medieval times, stretching over 200 years, and all aimed at ‘liberating’ Christianity’s holiest sites from Muslim control. And although each was unique, they had one thing in common: In one way or another, they were all failures.”

This is nonsense. It isn’t at all “hard to grasp why events that happened nearly a millennium ago still dominate Arab perceptions.” The Arabs are married to ancient tribal cultures; their psyches are stuck in the Seventh Century. That is why their collective inventive contribution to the modern world is disproportionately smaller than their percentage of the world’s population. Furthermore, non-Muslims have been second-class citizens in every place dominated by Muslims from the Seventh Century to the present. So why does James Reston Jr. feel the need to strap quotation marks onto the word “liberating” when he mentions the attempts by Christians to repossess their holiest sites?

Reston is correct that all five of the Crusades failed to achieve a lasting Christian control of holy sites overwhelmed by the Muslims. So the Muslims won; shouldn’t they be celebrating their victory instead of pouting over it?

“Many Arabs,” Reston continues, “put great faith in a mysterious process they call ‘the forces of history.’ Western armies may commit aggression in the sands of the Middle East. They may kill many Arabs, and they may stay for years, even decades. But ultimately they will leave or become absorbed.” There is plenty of precedent for this perspective, but let’s be clear: the Crusaders did not journey eastward to conquer Islam but to secure their holy sites. Furthermore, the Arab notion of “forces of history” is very much akin to the Nineteenth Century American myth of American Manifest Destiny, the idea that it was obvious to any intelligent person that our nation would inevitably include all the land between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Muhammad’s big plan for our planet was nothing less than global Islam. It is noteworthy that the very same academics who decry the high cost of the mythic idea of American Manifest Destiny that was paid by the paleo-Americans, are now defending the advocates of global Islamic Manifest Destiny who are striving to convert all of the world’s people to a single religious perspective.

Reston offers up some boilerplate about how the first Crusaders wrested Jerusalem from an armed force Reston calls “its defenders.” He laments that “with the streets ankle deep in blood, the victors repaired to the Holy Sepulcher and dropped to their knees in piety and self-congratulation. The Christian God, they said, had guided their hand.” It’s a lurid image, but is it true?

Thomas Madden is a medieval historian at St. Louis University and the author of A Concise History of the Crusades. He reminds us that throughout most of the Middle Ages Christians were on the receiving end of pugnacious Muslim aggression. The Middle Ages were a time during which Christians, Jews, animists and everyone else lost ground to the conquering professional armies of a triumphalist Islam. Ever since the self-anointed representatives of Islamic Manifest Destiny slaughtered nearly three thousand of what they considered sub-human non-believers in lower Manhattan one bright September morning, people have been asking Thomas Madden what it was about the Crusades that justifies the behavior of contemporary jihadists. “My response,” said Madden, “is that it has nothing to do with the real Crusades but rather the way the Crusades have been packaged.”

Thomas Madden recalls a speech that Bill Clinton gave in October of 2001. In that public address Mr. Clinton, a veteran critic of Western civilization, declared that “Those of us who come from various European lineages are not blameless” for the mass murders of September 11th in Manhattan, in Washington and in Pennsylvania. Clinton rambled on about the Christian West’s terrible guiltiness for its successful capture of Jerusalem in 1099. Clinton’s chatter mimicked that of James Reston Jr. exactly: “The contemporary descriptions of the event describe soldiers walking on the Temple Mount, a holy place to Christians, with blood running up to their knees. I can tell you that that story is still being told today in the Middle East and we are still paying for it.”

Thomas Madden says of Clinton’s lurid characterization that “It originates from people in the West who were not at Jerusalem when it fell in 1099 but were eager to describe for Christians a kind of ritual purification of the city.” The number of dead did not exceed that of the jihadist attack on Manhattan. The majority of Muslims were allowed to leave the city, according to Madden. Clinton and his fellow liberals are careful not to mention the Muslim penchant for slaughtering every man, woman and child in Crusader cities. Habitual critics of the West are silent about Muslim atrocities. The late Peter Jennings of ABC News was a typical apologist: “Many people in the Middle East are actually aware of the slaughter and the violence that happened during the Middle Ages when the Roman pope sent Christian crusaders against Islam.”

In truth, the small forces sent eastward from Europe were on a mission to repossess Christian holy sites. Medieval Christians wanted these particular Muslims to stop molesting Christians; they had no other interest in Islam as such.

By contrast, Christian Egypt and Christian Syria were overwhelmed by an armed Muslim stampede: the Muslims conquered Spain and moved threateningly to the gates of Paris and Vienna. Their declared purpose was to throw Christian Europe into the Atlantic.

The Crusades were ineffectual attempts to reclaim what had been stolen from Christians. The First Crusade held Jerusalem for only eighty years. At best, Christian efforts halted an ever expanding Muslim land grab. Without armed resistance Christianity would have faded away along with the dying Roman Empire; without armed resistance the Muslims would have tossed Christianity into the dustbin of history in exactly the same manner in which they trashed Zoroastrianism, once the preeminent religion of Persia (modern Iran).

The notion that Muslims have been nursing a grudge for nine centuries because of the Crusades is nonsense. By the Eighteenth Century the Crusades were an historical footnote to most Muslims. Their contemporary feelings of victimhood are the result of some very real Twentieth Century setbacks augmented by fanciful Nineteenth Century French and English tales of the Crusades. The present Islamist vision of the Crusades is a hodgepodge of these European fictions which now function as a boogeyman to be trotted out every time the fatwa barking mullahs feel the need to energize their foot soldiers.

No exponent of planetary Islamic hegemony has given Crusade fantasies a greater workout than Osama bin Laden. He described one of his audiotapes as

“A message to our Muslim brothers in Iraq . . . We are following with great interest and concern the preparation of the crusaders to launch war to occupy a former capital of Islam, to pillage the wealth of Muslims and install a puppet government that follows the dictates of its masters in Washington and Tel Aviv.”
He went on to “otherize” everyone who might consider resisting his plan for a global caliphate as “infidels” and “allies of the devil.” He rattled on about the “crusader spite of Bush the father” and how to dig fortifications to defeat “the enemy crusade.” He disdained “the ignorant governments that rule all Arab states, including Iraq” and he emphasized his belief that Muslims must unite in a holy war against the West:

“This crusade war is primarily aimed at the people of Islam regardless of the removal or survival of the socialist government or Saddam.”
He sees one bright happenstance:

“It does not hurt that in the current circumstances, the interests of Muslims coincide with the interests of the socialists in the war against the crusaders . . .”
Osama bin Laden pours on the crusade references because he flatters himself to be the second coming of Saladin. More recently Osama bin Laden has turned his attention to Darfur, a region in western Sudan where the Muslim government has encouraged the Muslim militiamen of nomadic Arab tribes, known as the janjaweed, to slaughter, rape and torture Christians and animists and to burn their villages. The Muslims have murdered at least 180,000 “infidels” since February of 2003. Some estimates place the death toll at well over 300,000. Three million others are refugees in flight. The bloodletting began when African villagers resisted discrimination and oppression by the Arab-dominated government in Khartoum. When humanitarian agencies began assisting the oppressed and beleaguered blacks, Osama interpreted their presence as yet another assault on Allah’s Kingdom.

After a ceasefire was brokered between the Muslim government in the north and the villagers in the south, Osama railed against the agreement, he accused the United States of scheming to dispatch “crusader troops” to overrun Darfur “and steal its oil wealth under the pretext of peace keeping.” He called on every righteous Muslim to journey to Sudan and stockpile weapons for “a long-term war” against the infidels.

If all this had escaped your attention until now it may be because in all of the last year the CBS Evening News gave no more than two minutes of its attention to the anti-Christian genocide in Darfur. Compare that to the 36 minutes that CBS devoted to Michael Jackson. If the West sends any relief to the suffering Christians of Darfur, then that humanitarian gesture will resemble the Crusades of the Middle Ages: the Crusades were attempts by Christians in the West to assist faraway Christians who were suffering under the yoke of Islam.

Misunderstanding the Crusades

The emotional attachment that Western Christians once had to the Crusader idealists of the Middle Ages has been weakened by that generation of academics who were recoiling from the homicidal ideological warfare of the Twentieth Century and whose vision of human history was increasingly refracted by the distorting prism of Marxist theorizing. Once the professoriate had convinced itself that Marxism was “scientific” and a foolproof decoder of all human interaction it followed naturally that a Marxist interpretation of the Crusades must be the correct interpretation. The matter was thusly settled in their minds: the Crusades were all about class struggle and property and pillage and not about ideas and ideals. Once they were locked into their tight and familiar and formulaic theory of all human interaction, the leftist professors were incapable of comprehending how intellectually respectable the Christian theory of positive violence was for generations of medieval activists. This is remarkable because the notion of positive violence was a central theme of the great “scientific” Marxist mass movements in Twentieth Century Russia and China, the ones that swept hundreds of millions of humans to their deaths during peacetime.

Two contemporary scholars of the Crusades, Thomas Asbridge and Jonathan Philips, emphasize that any clear understanding of history requires an unflinching acceptance of the fact that violence was a normal, organic and integrated fact of medieval life. The second underappreciated dimension of medieval life was religiosity which implied a commitment to right conduct and a fear of damnation.

Religiosity was a deeply personal matter for the well-armed knights. Every sermon instructed them that killing was repugnant to Christ; they had no doubt that a host of demons crouched in wait, ever ready to drag the souls of the violent down into the bowels of Hell. The very skills for which the knight was honored were also those that threatened him with eternal damnation. Knights sought to improve their moral stature by undertaking pilgrimages and by donating generously to monasteries. Even so, their unease remained.

There was no such inner conflict among the Muslim captors of the Christian and Jewish Holy Land. From its first moments Islam was a political mass movement. The Quran is a battle plan for the conquest and subjugation of all non-Muslims. The Prophet Muhammad himself had announced that extremism in the cause of planetary Islam is no vice. The Saracen soldiers in the East were utterly unconflicted in their dedication to the use of violence to capture everything within their reach.

It was not until Pope Urban advised the Christian knights that a struggle to repossess the holiest of Christian sites in the East would win them a remission of past sins were the knights relieved of their inner conflict. By making clear to the knights that an armed struggle to liberate their Christian brethren from second-class status under Islamic hegemony was a righteous cause, Pope Urban created the engine of the Crusades. The knights were finally free to exercise their skills in the service of a cause that would secure their place in Paradise. The concept of positive violence had been embedded in the Quran since the Seventh Century. All of the homicidal Muslim suicide bombers of our time have been smitten with the Quran’s encouragement of positive violence. Islam was wedded to violence from its inception; no agonized theorizing or soul searching hindered Islam’s headlong plunge into the bloodletting that created the Muslim world.

Apologists for Muslim violence, such as James Reston Jr., tell us that “In its purest sense, jihad is defensive. It is written in the Quran: “And fight in Allah’s cause against those who wage war against you, but do not commit aggression for verily Allah does not love aggressors.” This is junk intellectualism at its worst. Muhammad gave his followers free license to treat all non-Muslims like dirt. Try for a moment to imagine Jesus telling his disciples that it was permissible to take hostages and hold them for ransom. Muhammad told his followers exactly that, without blinking. Violence created the Muslim world and it was counter-violence that kept the armies of Islam from eradicating Christian Europe the way they had eradicated Zoroastrian Persia.

Liberal “senior scholar” James Reston Jr. gives his best pitch for Islamic jihad: “To defend against Western aggression and occupation is a sacred duty.” Really? Reston is strangely silent about the sacred duty of Christians to defend themselves against the sort of aggression and occupation that left Jerusalem in the hands of the scimitar-wielding Muslims. Pope Urban was not so tongue tied. In an attempt to sweep centuries of Muslim aggression under the rug, Reston wrote in March of 2003:

“In the past 18 months jihad has become just as confused as crusade in the American mind. At first, bin Laden and other violent Arab extremists appropriated and co-opted the concept of jihad. In much of the American press, any Arab with a bomb and a grudge is considered to be on a jihad, regardless of his support among the wider public.”
This is pathetic multi-culti apologetics. The Prophet Muhammad envisioned Islam as a uniting credo that would gather all the fractious and feuding nomadic tribesmen of the Arabian Peninsula under one big tent. It was Muhammad’s intent from the very beginning to project the power of the united Arab horsemen beyond the borders of their traditional stomping grounds. In this sense Muhammad resembles Genghis Khan far more than he resembles Confucius, Lao Tzu, Zoroaster, Buddha, or Jesus.

After the horrendous mass-murder surprise attacks of September 11th, 2001, the armed forces of many countries united to journey to the East and wreck the camps of the jihadists. Their mission, as George W. Bush put it, was to “drain the swamp.” In response to this response a group calling itself the Islamic Research Academy fired off a statement that proclaimed “According to Islamic law, if the enemy steps on Muslim’s land, jihad becomes a duty of every male and female Muslim.” These “academicians” called upon “Arabs and Muslims throughout the world to be ready to defend themselves and their faith . . . Our Arab and Islamic nation, and even our faith, are a main target of all these military buildups.” So if we swat the hornet that stung us then we are bad people who are “targeting” Islam. James Reston Jr. and lots of other liberals are in complete accord with this nutty perspective.

Here’s the truth. The surprise attacks of 2001 were in the planning stages for years. The unhappy misfits who carried out the attacks traveled thousands of miles to non-Muslim America where they spent a long time learning to pilot big American airplanes. Then, one bright September morning, these jihadi awoke, said their morning prayers to Allah and headed for the airport. After they had smashed three giant flying fuel bombs into two American cities and were thwarted in their attempt to smash a fourth airplane into the Capitol Building, the democratically-elected leader of the American people sent an armed force to wreck the nest of hoodlums who were hunkered down in the wilds of Afghanistan. Because of America’s provoked and principled response to outrageous acts of homicidal Islamic aggression, the Islamic Research Academy calls America “the enemy” that dares to step on Muslim lands. Well, if you don’t want your neighbor showing up on your doorstep with a baseball bat, then don’t break into his house and murder his children.

This reasoning is totally incomprehensible to James Reston Jr. who quotes the Islamic Academy approvingly. Furthermore, Islam is not under attack. The Christian world wouldn’t give Islam a second thought if Islam could break its nasty habit of molesting everyone who didn’t pray facing Mecca. The mostly-Christian army of the United States has no hostile intentions toward Islam; neither did the Crusader armies of long ago. The West could only hope that the frisky and infantile children of Islam would get their arrogant homicidal bigotry under control and join the rest of the world’s adults in the Twenty-First Century.

James Reston Jr. managed one moment of clarity:

“In crusades, the war can never be separated from its long and tedious aftermath. In their view of history, Arabs know the Americans will want to go home as quickly as they can. They will not want to bankrupt the American treasury, nor will they want to stay for decades. They will tire of their American crusader kingdom.”
The high cost of maintaining long supply lines, including a chain of Crusader castles, was the ultimate undoing of the Crusade campaigns. The fractious nature of multi-cultural Christian Europe was also a weakness. The forces of the First Crusade were comprised of four contingents: the northern French, the southern French, the Germans and Lotharingians, and the southern Italian Normans. Each contingent has its own leader and spoke its own language. There was no top-ranking commander. Some of the groups bore grudges against others. There was also a fifth contingent, later nicknamed the People’s Crusade. This group was comprised of simple pious folk and a rustic rabble of adventurers. The People’s Crusade was the first to reach the East, at which time the Turks slaughtered all but a few of them. The better-prepared knights managed to secure Jerusalem and the Christian holy sites, but only for eighty years. All crusader efforts were ultimately frustrated by the long thin line of supply and reinforcement between Europe and the Holy Land.

Muslims have the fondest attachment to the Crusade of Richard the Lionhearted, from 1187 to 1192. In this drama the Muslims are triumphant: The Arab hero Saladin, “the lance of jihad,” crushes the Crusader army at the Battle of Hattin in 1187. Memorials to Saladin decorate the Middle East. The late Syrian President Hafez Assad spiced up his office décor with a gigantic painting of the Battle of Hattin which he proudly displayed to Western visitors. One day, he would say, a new Saladin would arrive.

And what would this new Saladin do? Defend the windswept, sun-blasted deserts of the Middle East? Against what? If it weren’t for the fact that Western people had found a use for petroleum, no one would give the Muslim nations a second thought. To the people of the modern world Islam has all the curb appeal of a Model T rusting in a roadside ditch: It’s an antique, a relic, a throwback to its Seventh Century tribal origins. Ninety percent of American conversions to Islam are undertaken by America’s least-educated black folks. Most of these conversions occur in prisons, which are America’s prime incubators of homegrown Islam.

How Things Are Now

In recognition of the fact that rogue Islamists are now exploiting the secrecy and protection of hardened subterranean facilities, like the uranium enrichment factory buried beneath Natanz south of Tehran, the Bush administration began researching the utility of bunker-busting nuclear weapons in 2003. President George W. Bush included proposed spending for further research of such weapons in his federal budget plan for the 2006 fiscal year at the bargain price of only four million dollars.

The bunker-buster nuclear weapon, officially known as the “robust nuclear earth penetrator,” together with “mini nuclear” bombs with a yield of less than 5 kilotons, would have been the muscle behind the Bush administration’s ready-for-use nuclear policy. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) was one of the most vocal opponents of the bunker buster, which she said “sends the wrong signals to the rest of the world by reopening the nuclear door and beginning the testing and development of a new generation of nuclear weapons.”

Congress denied funding for the proposed research and thereby sent all End-of-Days Muslim fanatics a clear signal that America won’t be wrecking their hardened subterranean nuclear weapons factories or their buried stashes of chemical and biological agents with any really big hammers. And besides, it would look “unfair.” If Western democracies have nuclear weapons, then why shouldn’t Islamic theocracies have nuclear weapons? Our public image is at stake here; we don’t want to look like a bully who can’t empathize. And so on . . .

One thing is certain, if the non-Muslim world dithers, then the day will arrive when the cult of the Twelfth Imam will have a rocket standing tall on the launch pad and ready to fly. This arrow of Allah will perfectly express the blind bigotry of fourteen centuries of aggressive Islamic jihad. Going nuclear is just the predictable “next step” for jihadi who dream the dream of global Islamic Manifest Destiny. In Tehran it’s springtime for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Watch out folks, here comes the master faith.

Nowadays, humanity as a whole is facing a psychological war in a form that is far more dangerous than any conventional military war. The war in question is the propaganda war.

Propaganda is one of the most lethal and destructive weapons of war. Its impact is great and it is not an overstatement to state that humanity as a whole is under siege from this.

Therefore effort must be exerted to study it with the view to uprooting it and eliminating its causes before it causes irreparable damage to the very essence of human life.

Brothers in Islaam! If one takes a studious look at the history of man, he will find that propaganda and rumour have been constant factors throughout the ages; in fact it has flourished with the advancement of all civilizations and has been a source of anxiety and distress for many a nation. We must know that no concrete effort was made to bring this demon under perpetual control until the advent of Islaam.

Islaam, being a religion that is a source of mercy, justice and peace for mankind, took a decisive stance at this undesirable phenomenon and put it under strict control through divine injunctions from the Qur’aan and Sunnah. It did this by prohibiting all utterances that could cause dissention among people. It prohibited backbiting, lying, gossip, calumny and tale-mongering and threatened those who carry tales with a severe torment in the hereafter. The Glorious Qur’aan says that which translates as: “Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread (or publicised) among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter.” (An-Noor: 19).

The Qur’aan also commands the verification of information; “O you who have believed! If there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.” (Al-Hujuraat: 6).

Allaah the Exalted also calls to the attention of man the fact that he will be held responsible for each and every utterance that he makes. Allaah says that which translates as: “He (i.e. man) does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared (to record).” (Qaaf: 18).

In actuality, propaganda and rumours are the basis of mankind thinking ill of the Muslims and this has been prohibited by Allaah when He says that which translates to: “O you who have believed! Avoid much suspicion; indeed some suspicions are sins.” (Al-Hujuraat: 12).

The Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam also condemned tale-bearing when he said: ‘It is enough for a man to relay all that he hears for him to be among the liars.’ In order to block the way of the rumour-mongers and detractors, he said, ‘Shall I not inform you of the wickedest among you?’ His companions said, ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allaah!’ He said, ‘They are those who go about gossiping and causing enmity among those who have love for each other.’

Fellow Muslims! Rumour-mongering and propaganda have caused havoc to all kinds of people. It has destroyed so many homes; brought about the collapse of so many dynasties and caused tribulations and war. Its perpetrators are ill-natured, weak-minded and completely lacking in manliness. They have no respect for the truth; in fact lying and falsehood are to virtuous acts to them. Their aim is to cause mischief in the land and many have perished by their heinous acts.

History is replete with accounts of propagandists and fabricators who spare no effort in blocking the truth from reaching the people. During the time of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam the pagans strove hard without success to terminate Islaam and eliminate its Prophet. They falsely labelled him in order to prevent people from listening to his message. They also launched different forms psychological warfare against him and his companions but all of this was to no avail.

One group of people who partake in propaganda campaigns are the Jews, who are well-known for their rebellion against the Creator and their killing of Allaah’s Prophets who were sent to them. They levelled the most terrible allegations against Prophet ‘Eesa and his mother, peace be upon them both, and committed treacherous acts against the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam in Al-Madeenah through their acts of misinformation in which they have no rival.

The Jews collaborated with the hypocrites to falsely and mischievously accuse the mother of the faithful ‘Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, of fornication in order to damage the reputation of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and thereby cause a setback to his message. It is in this regard that Allaah strongly rebuked the Muslims who were innocently influenced by this propaganda when He said that which translates as: “And why, when you heard it, did you not say, “It is not for us to speak of this. Exalted are You, (O Allaah): This is a great slander.” Allaah warns you against returning to the likes of this (conduct), ever, if you should be believers.” (An-Noor: 16-17).

Brothers in Islaam! The propaganda war is now in its golden age, due to modern technology and the sophisticated means of communication which are used by vicious people to terrorise mankind psychologically and intellectually and weaken their morale through their evil-breeding agencies.

Propaganda and rumour-mongering are crimes against religion, society and noble values. It is truly saddening that many of these rumours are believed by the masses to be facts. Let those among the Muslims who indulge in these abominable acts remember that they may lose their religion and even their lives if they do not desist. Is it proper for us Muslims to forsake all of our principles and have ill-thoughts of our scholars just because of mere rumours that we hear about them?

Let the scholars of the Muslim nation and their students rise up and fight this ugly phenomenon. Let them realise that they are the principal target of this war. Let them hold fast to the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam as their righteous predecessors have done during their times.

Mosques, schools, homes and the Muslim mass media also have a vital role to play in waging war against propaganda. Let all efforts be made with sincerity in order that we may achieve victory.

Brothers in Islaam! Our religion has laid down guidelines to be followed in fighting rumours, foremost of which is the fear of Allaah and verification of news before accepting it. It also enjoins objectivity in treating all matters.

Brothers in faith! We must not conclude this speech without condemning the mischievous war that the western media groups are waging against Islaam and the Muslims. Let us join hands to fight this propaganda and put up a concerted effort to show our enemies that we shall never compromise on any of our principles or values. Naggar cited the example of Richard S. Burton, a British writer who wrote in his book "A Journey to Mecca" how he publicly converted to Islaam for ulterior motives rather than out of real faith. Naggar also referred to Turkish Jews who converted to Islaam to reach power in Turkey during the times of Muslim Caliphs.

For some, after the demise of Communism, Islaam is the Greatest threat. All the forces that brought about the fall of Communism are now positioned against Islaam.

Many of them change their appearance so as to look odd, so how can we say that this is how they were created? Allaah does not create anyone just to punish or torture them. He created mankind to worship Him, but He may try His slaves with hardship as a test of their faith, to expiate for their sins and to raise their status. Allaah is too Just to force a person to commit sin and then punish him. On the contrary, people commit sins by their own free choice – like these Perverted People – and it is for this that they deserve to be punished. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "And your Lord treats no one with injustice" [Qur'ân in Surah al-Kahf 18:49]

And Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "Nay, Allaah never commands Fahshaa' (evil deeds, unlawful sexual intercourse). Do you say of Allaah what you know not?"

An empire in its death throes is not a pretty sight. The more desperately its rulers cling to power in the face of impending defeat, the more they hasten its demise. The more its rulers fight to preserve their rule, the more the empire is sacrificed to serve selfish, repressive wants.

On Oct. 4, 2006, New York University historian Tony Judt, who is Jewish, was due to give a talk at the Polish consulate on the stifling effect of the Israel Lobby, yet the American Jewish Congress and the Anti-Defamation League —Arab Defamation League would be more accurate—forced the consulate to rescind the invitation.

This censoring of Judtwas gratuitous because the substance of his talk, the previously published essay “The Israel Lobby” by American academics Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer, was already in the public domain. Not satisfied with sabotaging the event, though, The Lobby’s David Frum felt the need to smear Judt for pursuing “genocide liberalism”—like “anti-Semitism,” a nonsense term of abuse.

A similar fate befell Baroness Jennifer Tonge, a Liberal Democrat in Great Britain’s House of Lords. Speaking at Edinburgh University, she remarked: “The pro-Israeli lobby has got its grips on the western world, its financial grips. I think they’ve probably got a grip on our party.”

Like Judt, she deemed her remarks unremarkable because they had already been made by Walt and Mearsheimer.

The intelligent thing for The Lobby to do would have been to ignore her comments, but no. An all-party group of Lords accused Tonge of “evok[ing] a classic anti-Jewish conspiracy theory” that was symptomatic of the rise of anti-Semitism in the U.K.

The knee-jerk recklessness of this charge is obvious, and served only prove Tonge’s thesis that The Lobby manipulates British politics. As Tonge rightly said in her defence: “[My comments] were about the Israeli lobby in politics. They were a big distance from being about Jewishness or anti-Semitism.”

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour also paid the price for speaking honestly about the cause of suffering in Palestine. On Nov. 29, 2006, she visited the Gaza Strip in the wake of Israel’s massacre of Beit Hanoun and charged Israel with committing massive human rights violations: Agence France-Presse:

“The human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territory is grave and worsening, within a general climate of impunity. Overall I was struck throughout my visit by the sense of vulnerability and abandonment that was expressed to me by virtually all the civilians that I met, both in Israel and in the occupied Palestinian territories.”*

It’s hard to argue with first-hand evidence, but that didn’t stop B’nai Brith Canada’s Vice President Frank Dimant from shooting his mouth off, and shooting The Lobby in the foot:“[This was] yet another attempt by the UN body to delegitimize the Jewish state.”

Note the implication in this statement. Dimant has directly equated Israel’s legitimacy with the commission of atrocities!

However self-destructive the Lobby’s tactics have been in these three cases, they cannot match the hysterical depravity that has greeted Jimmy Carter because of his new book Palestine—Peace not Apartheid.

First, here’s how Carter describes his book: “The ultimate purpose of my book is to present facts about the Middle East that are largely unknown in the U.S., to precipitate discussion and to help restart peace talks that can lead to permanent peace for Israel and its neighbours. Another hope is that Jews and other Americans who share this goal might be motivated to express their views, even publicly, and perhaps in concert.…”

He goes on to say: “The book describes the abominable oppression and persecution in the occupied Palestinian territories with a rigid system of required passes and strict segregation between Palestine’s citizens and Jewish settlers in the West Bank.… In many ways, this is more oppressive than what blacks lived under in South Africa during apartheid. I have made it clear that the motivation is not racism but the desire of a minority of Israelis to confiscate and colonize choice sites in Palestine, and then to forcefully suppress any objections from the displaced citizens.

Carter’s compassion is genuine and the facts of Israeli apartheid are beyond doubt. Even neo-Nazi Avigdor Lieberman said Arabs and Jews cannot live together and that all Palestinians have to be removed. Yet The Lobby has seen to it that Carter has been marginalized and his views rubbished:

"I have seen few news stories in major newspapers about what I have written. Book reviews in the mainstream media have been written mostly by representatives of Jewish organizations who would be unlikely to visit the occupied territories, and their primary criticism is that the book is anti-Israel.”

The most ignorant and incompetent of these came from David Horowitz, who writes for a right-wing website. He saw fit to libel Carter as a Jew-hater, genocide enabler and a liar. Throughout his tirade, Horowitz collectively libeled Palestinians as racists and Jew haters, but saw nothing wrong with condemning Carter for having committed a “blood libel” on Jews.

Horowitz’s screed defies analysis because it is devoid of intellect. It is so brazenly, even proudly, dishonest that it destroys his own credibility and ennobles Carter. Horowitz actually said: “[It] is a preposterous lie to say that the Palestinians had their own land and that it was occupied by the Jews,” as if he thought nobody had read Moshe Dayan’s infamous remark!:

“Jewish villages were built in the place of Arab villages. You do not even know the names of these Arab villages, and I do not blame you because geography books no longer exist, not only do the books not exist, the Arab villages are not there either. Nahlal arose in the place of Mahlul; Kibbutz Gvat in the place of Jibta; Kibbutz Sarid in the place of Huneifis; and Kefar Yehushu'a in the place of Tal al-Shuman. There is not one single place built in this country that did not have a former Arab population.”

Despite the libels and misrepresentations, Carter has reported brisk sales of his book, selling 1,000 copies at each of five appearances, which means that The Lobby has screeched itself into absurdity trying to prop up an empire that has no legitimacy and no future.

I can understand The Lobby wanting to censor uncomfortable truths—the Church has been doing it for centuries—but to sink to abject dishonesty and character assassination, in the absence of anything else, cannot possibly help it manufacture consent for Israel. Intellectual bankruptcy and panic have overtaken The Lobby, and the zionist empire is not long for this world. It is not worth saving.

Jews above criticism?

It is almost impossible for an American Jew to criticize the Israeli government's policy toward the Palestinians without being called anti-Semitic or a self-hating Jew.

I found this out in the 1980s when I wrote an article for a Center City paper called the Welcomat about finding a Jewish temple where my son would not automatically be taught that all Palestinians are terrorists. Vitriolic letters from all over the East Coast lambasted my views.

Jimmy Carter's new book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, is also reaping tremendous criticism from Jewish groups and individuals. This criticism drowns out the reality of what is happening. Israel says its security fence is to keep out terrorists, but the wall is carving up the West Bank so that Palestinians are cut off from their olive groves, farming fields, water, education and health resources.

If American Jews could only see that Israeli treatment of Palestinians is causing more hopelessness, and consequently terrorism, then maybe they would work against the wall, too. Without justice, there is no peace.

Recently the Jews, who have historically nurtured severe enmity towards Muslims which continues to the present time, assaulted some Arab Muslim countries. Allaah, the Exalted and Glorified said that which translates as: “You will surely find the most intense people in animosity toward the believers [to be] the Jews and those who associate others with Allaah….” (Al-Maa'idah: 82). The Jews are the people who spoke about Allaah indecently when they said that which translates as: “The hand of Allaah is chained” (Al-Maa’idah: 64), meaning that He is a miser. Allaah responded to them by saying that which translates as: “Chained are their hands, and cursed are they for what they say.” (Al-Maa’idah: 64). As a result, Allaah tied up their hands metaphorically by making them the most miserly people of all mankind. Due to this, we can observe that they never spend any money unless they are sure that they will attain a greater amount in return.

The Jews are those who broke Allaah’s covenant after it had been ratified. Allaah, the Exalted and Glorified said that which translates as: “And [mention, O Muhammad], when Allaah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture, [saying], ‘You must make it clear [i.e. explain it] to the people and not conceal it’. But they threw it away behind their backs and exchanged it for a small price. And wretched is that which they purchased.” (Aal-'Imraan: 187).

The Jews are those who murdered Allaah’s Prophets and spread mischief throughout the land; and Allaah hates those who make mischief.

The Jews are the people who conspired against the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and breached their treaty with him. When the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam emigrated to Madeenah, there were three tribes of Jews with whom he concluded treaties of safety and security. However, due to their treachery and betrayal, they infringed upon these.

Therefore, after the Muslims returned to Madeenah after the victorious Battle of Badr, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam expelled from Madeenah the Jews of the first of the three tribes, Banu Qaynuqaa’, due to their violation of the their treaty with him. Their women and offspring were evacuated safely, while the Muslims seized their property.

The Jews of Banu An-Nadeer, who were the second of the three Jewish tribes in Madeenah, were next in line for expulsion as they had also broken the pledge that they concluded with the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. Therefore, following the Battle of Uhud, The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam besieged them until they surrendered and begged him to be allowed to leave Madeenah safely with whatever their camels could carry of their properties, except for the weapons and tools of war. Later on some of them settled in Khaybar and some in Shaam, or ancient Syria.

As for the Jews of Banu Quraydhah, who were the third of the three tribes, they broke their treaty with the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam during the Battle of Al-Ahzaab, when they thought that the Muslims were weak and pre-occupied. Therefore, after the battle, when the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam besieged them, they pleaded that Sa’d bin Mu’aadh, may Allaah be pleased with him, who was an old ally of theirs, be allowed to act as an arbiter to decide in their case. This request was granted by Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and Sa’d decided that their men, who numbered six to seven hundred, should be killed, their properties should be distributed among Muslims and that their women and offspring be held captive.

These are just some examples of the treachery of the Jews against the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. Another example occurred during the conquest of Khaybar, when a Jewish woman presented to the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam a poisoned roasted lamb. Contrary to the Jews hopes and expectations and although the Prophet ate from the poisoned lamb, he was not harmed. However, on his deathbed the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “I still feel the pain caused by the food I ate at Khaybar and at this time I feel as if my aorta is being cut from that poison.”

O Muslims! The Jews are notorious for their betrayal and treachery. They incurred Allaah’s curse and are deserving of His wrath. They made lawful what Allaah prohibited through stratagem and cunning. This is why Allaah cursed them and transmuted them into monkeys and pigs. Shame is pitched over them like a tent wherever they are found, except when under a covenant of protection from Allaah and from men.

O Muslims! We must strongly prepare for these and all other enemies of Islaam, whoever and wherever they are. We have to become stronger in order to fight the enemies of Islaam with the same weapons they use in order to plant a wedge between their ranks.

We must realise that victory is based on certain conditions which are as follows:

First: To be sincere in our intention and know that the only purpose of Jihaad is to exalt the supremacy of Allaah's religion to and firmly establish the Islamic Sharee’ah; which is based on the noble Qur’aan and the Prophetic Sunnah.

Second: To foster patience and piety, since Allaah is with those who observe patience and adhere to piety. We should observe steadfastness with regard to Jihaad and fear Allaah by adhering to all His commandments and abstaining from all His prohibitions. It is negligence with regard to the commandments of Allaah and His Messenger sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam that incurs the abandoning of Allaah of his slaves, which in turn leads to defeat. When the companions of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam failed to observe just one of his commandments at the Battle of Uhud, they were defeated after victory seemed certain. Later on, they were saved by Allaah’s mercy and forgiveness.

Third: To intelligently evaluate our strength, bearing in mind that there is no might or power except with Allaah. We should not be conceited due to our strength and numbers, since arrogant pride without reliance on Allaah is a cause for defeat. The companions of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam were assured by their large numbers at the Battle of Hunayn, but this did not avail them and they turned back in retreat. However, Allaah sent down His tranquillity upon His Messenger sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and the believers and assisted them with forces of angels. Therefore victory turned to the side of the believers.

Fourth: To use military arms which utilise state-of-the-art technology.

If the above four conditions are fulfilled, Allaah’s promise as stated in the following verse will come true: Allaah, the Exalted and Glorified said that which translates as: “O you who have believed, if you support Allaah, He will support you and plant firmly your feet.” (Muhammad: 7).

O young Muslim men! You are the future! You are the men of firm resolution! You are the men of determination! Embark upon training if you are not doing so already. Do not allow yourself to be ignorant of the simplest types of defence. Are you satisfied with backwardness while you are the generation of the modern age? Allaah has created you and requires you to defend your religion and the Muslim nation. I hope that your achievements will be a source of ease for the Muslim nation and bring about its felicity, tranquillity and prosperity. I ask Allaah to guide us to be among those who exert their efforts in His cause and support His religion. Allaah, the Exalted and Glorified said that which translates as: “And Allaah will surely support those who support Him [i.e., His cause]. Indeed, Allaah is Powerful and Exalted in Might. Those who if we give them authority in the land, establish prayer and give zakah and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. Do we see a chilling parallel between the events of the 1933- 1938 in Nazi Germany and those happening today in Iran?

Hitler also came close to his dream of developing nuclear weapons. The Nazis were developing carrier systems to reach the USA with their intercontinental 'Amerika-bomber', including the innovative Horten Ho XVIII. Nazi Germany was not only trying to develop nuclear weapons but actually tested atomic devices near the end of World War II. there was an operational nuclear reactor close to Berlin in 1944-45, and that Nazi physicists had drafted a patent for a plutonium bomb as early as 1941. The Third Reich was on the verge of winning the race to deploy the first nuclear weapon.

But once we had a faint whiff of evidence of the Nazis attempts at design, testing and production of nuclear weapons, and their carrier systems, we struck out decisively, and bombed out all the heavy water and uranium enrichment facilities in the Third Reich some of which were located in Norway to keep them out of sight of the allied bombers. It was this action on the part of the allies, that put paid, Hitler's attempts to win WW2. Had we not done struck out at that time, the free world of today would have been not much different from Vichy France under Nazi occupation.

What lessons can our history of checkmating and ultimately destroying Nazism, teach us in our battle with Islam today, when like Hitler, the Iranians are on the verge of making nuclear weapons with delivery system to bring mainland America within the range of their missiles in the not too distant future? The Iranians are using the same trick on the West again. If the West succumbs to this Iranian deception (Taqiya), we would be imperiling our future.

If we could act decisively against the Nazis by bombing their nuclear facilities in Norway, what makes us drag our feet to act with the same decisiveness against the more pervasive if equally dangerous enemy - Islamism. Iran is the Nazi Germany of the war on terrorism and perhaps s far closer to making a cache of nuclear weapons with intercontinental delivery systems than the Nazis ever were. Time is running out for us. Can we take out the Iranian nuclear facilities before the nuclear Jihad reaches our shores and again stuns us as it did on 9/11, but now with a casualty figure hundred times higher than 9/11? America’s survival is at stake, how strong are our survival instincts? Is anyone at the Oval Office listening?

Editor of Iranian Kayhan Daily Reacts to U.N. Resolution Against Holocaust Denial: ‘The Resolution Prepares the U.N.'s Corpse for Burial in the Graveyard of History’

In reaction to the January 26, 2007 U.N. resolution condemning Holocaust denial, the editor of the Iranian daily Kayhan, Hossein Shariatmadari, who is close to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, attacked the U.N. and accused it of acting against its own charter, and against human rights.

The following are excerpts from the article: [1]

"If the U.N. General Assembly's resolution of Friday was not the last nail in the coffin of this organization, then it [at least] drove one in, and it is preparing the U.N.'s corpse for burial in the graveyard of history… The draft of this resolution, which is clearly opposed to the most basic recognized principles of human rights, was brought before the U.N. General Assembly by the U.S. on Tuesday, January 23, 2007, and that same day it received the agreement of the majority of the countries, including Russia and China.

"The Holocaust, or the slaughter of Jews during of WWII by German Nazis, is a myth and a contrived story. Up until now, many well-known European and American historians have denied that it occurred, by presenting irrefutable historical documents and records. Despite the fact that Holocaust denial is considered a crime in some European countries, including France, and despite the fact that a number of famous researchers and historians, like Robert Faurisson and Roger Garaudy, have been tried and convicted on this charge in the French courts, their condemnation has not become an obstacle to the denial of this great historical lie by other famous researchers and historians, who see silence in the face of the myth of the Holocaust as a great crime. And despite the consequences of publishing their research, they do not refrain from expressing their scientific opinion on this topic.

"The myth of the Holocaust is an excuse [used by] West to establish the illegal Zionist regime, and denial of it is an irrefutable attestation - in addition to many other attestations - that clearly testify to the illegality of the existence of the Zionist regime.

Not only can the U.N.'s Friday resolution not protect the role of 'the walking baton' for the collapsing Zionist entity, but it is a sturdy nail in the coffin of the U.N. For the first time since the Bush regime launched its open-ended war against terror in 2001, they have begun to classify the elusive terrorist enemy as "Islamo-fascists". Previously Washington had carefully limited the words Islam or Muslim in relation to the war and had referred to the enemy generically as terrorists – a troubling loose term for anyone who resists the war, real terrorist or nationalist resister. As George W. Bush made clear in the 2004 General Election, he does not do "nuance".

Is re-labeling radical Islam as Islamo-fascism purely a political ploy by Washington? Bush certainly has political reasons for doing so. Starting with 9-11, Bush and his neo-cons have blatantly appropriated American fear to achieve both domestic and foreign policy objectives. To perpetuate wars of aggression abroad, an unquestioning and frightened home population is critical.

However, after almost five years of relentless manipulation and with the 2006 mid-term election looming, there are signs that Americans are finally becoming skeptical of Bush’s fear-mongering. What better time then for Bush to re-cast the enemy with a name as historically frightening and odious as fascism? What greater enemy of civilization than violent, racist fascism and its disciples such as Hitler? The word fascist also creates a historic connection with World War II, with Bush as the self-appointed savior offering to save western Christian civilization – while creating new markets for American multi-nationals, naturally.

Regardless of Bush’s political reasons, is there, any truth to the term "Islamo-fascism"? Are only individual radical Islamists such as Bin Laden fascistic or does Islam itself contain seeds of fascism. The word fascist is complex and probably too easily thrown around. Any authoritarian figure with rigid conservative views or a believer in force, has probably been labeled as fascist at some point.

Although there is no fixed definition of fascism, there are features common to all its forms. According to western political thought, fascist beliefs are ultra-conservative, elitist, often racist, opposed to equality and democracy and, above all, utterly opposed to socialism and liberalism. Fascist movements are also always willing to use violence to gain and keep power. Although supporting rule by a chosen elite, fascism uses the language of equality – ordinary people have to be seduced if they are to be ruled. Hitler for example achieved this trick by using the slogans of socialism to fool German workers and then indoctrinated them by teaching that all Germans were united by a superior racial bond which trumped all class differences. The real rulers, the old German elites and big business, understood the joke of course and became Nazism’s natural partners. The same thing happened in Italy under Mussolini, although there was less emphasis on race. Whatever the method, fascism attempts to create a bond of unity and equality among its followers, which is then translated into permanent political power.

Perhaps the main characteristic of fascism is that in seeking power it must impose a dominant, all-pervasive ideology, that is accepted almost like religious truth. This ideology must gain control all aspects of law, politics, education and culture. In Germany, Nazi ideology probably came as close to any belief system has come to completely controlling a country. Fascist ideology, whether based on race, faith, nationalism or a longing for a glorious past, must offer certainty, identity and protection to those who accept it and hostility to the "other". For fascism to survive it must remain unquestioned, and to achieve this, the "other" must be destroyed ideologically and maybe physically.

Few secularists would hesitate to call the Taliban or Al-Qaeda fascist-like, but these are small groups dedicated to seeking power through religious war. The more critical question is whether Islamic teaching itself contain seeds of fascism?

On its face, Islam, the faith of a billion people, with its message of a universal brotherhood united and equal in faith before Allah, appears to utterly contradict fascism. Unlike fascism’s necessity for a permanent ruling elite, Islam, with its many religious leaders and traditions, seems to support a chaotic equality. It is also true that Islamists claim Islam is historically destined to rule the world but in this they are not very different from Christian evangelicals who hope to win the world for Christ. What then, if anything, is so different and dangerous about Islam that Washington has taken to calling radical Muslims fascists? Asking such a question does not imply that other faiths could not possibly be fascistic – in fact quite the contrary, given horrors such as the Spanish Inquisition.

Islam in its pristine form that existed in 7th Century Arabia, is an ideology that openly seeks political power. It seeks to dominate the lives of believer and non-believers under its power. This was made clear by Islam’s founder Mohammad who, based on his military power, took Mecca and became the spiritual head and political ruler of Arabia. The early caliphs who succeeded Mohammad, carved out a massive empire from Spain to India and imposed Islam upon many of the conquered peoples by the sword. This is an uncomfortable historical fact that western liberals and Islamic scholars ignore, tending, instead, to emphasize that the crusades were the beginning of the troubled relationship between Islam and the West. The real collision began in the 7th Century when Arab Muslims, without provocation, attacked Zoroastrian Iran, the Christian Byzantine empire and Spain soon thereafter.

Providing religious justification for the early Islamic conquests was the Koran, considered the literal, unalterable word of God, and the words and deeds of Mohammad himself, known as Hadith (both sources together form the basis of Islamic Shariah law). Orthodox Islam divided the world’s people into two parts, the House of Islam or peace and the House of the infidel or war. Islam teaches that it is the religious duty of Muslims to make relentless war until the infidel was conquered, killed or better still converted. Since the Koran and Hadith are considered divine, the duty to conduct Jihad or "holy war", becomes a never-ending religious duty, ensuring constant distrust and strife with non-Muslims. Thus, it is orthodox Islamic theology that justifies perpetual war upon the non-Muslim. Thankfully, relatively few Muslims support such war literally.

In countries, such as Pakistan or Saudi Arabia, Islamic law is an all pervasive ideology that seeks to influence and bend politics to its will. It also reserves for itself the power to regulate education, public and private lives, social and sexual relationships amongst Muslims and non-Muslims. There is no area that Islamic law does not seek to influence. In this respect it is authoritarian and, when unopposed, lends itself readily to totalitarianism. In fact, any act seen as criticizing Islam can bring the charge of blasphemy or apostasy, with severe consequences. It is with this threat that Muslim intellectuals are often silenced. Islam’s totalitarian nature is also evidenced by denying Muslims the right to freedom of conscience by leaving Islam. A Muslim who dares to leave Islam and adopt another faith can be executed as an apostate.

Since 9-11 Muslim scholars and western liberals have been at pains to portray Islam as a faith that tolerates others. Beside the fact that tolerance alone is hardly reason to rejoice, certain troubling issues about Islamic "tolerance" are never discussed in the West. Put simply, other faiths are not accorded equal rights in countries where Islamic Shariah law is prevalent.

The equality that Islam talks about is not based on principles the West understands. The Western idea of equality, however imperfect in practice, is universalist, being based on the Enlightenment and later liberal thought. Islamic equality is the equality only of Muslim males. Under Shariah law the non-Muslim occupies second-class status of varying degrees. For example a non-Muslim may not testify against a Muslim nor does Shariah allow marriage between a Muslim woman and a non-Muslim male, although, for Muslim demographic advantage, it permits Muslim men to marry non-Muslim women. If Shariah law is strictly applied, a religious apartheid that victimizes non-Muslims is the only outcome. However the Quran sets a very clear statement as Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala says which translates as: "But know by your Lord they can have no faith until they make you judge in all disputes between them and find in themselves no resistance against your decision and accept them with full submission"(Al-Nisaa’: 65).

Think about this O Muslims, this Qur’anic expression is clear, accept it with full submission. Therefore, faith is submission and Islam is submission to Allah, the Lord The One and only with no partner.
